NeaVia. The Neapolitan Villa. Antiquities and Nature between the Renaissance and the Baroque. Proceedings of the National Conference of Studies

News | 02/02/2026

The volume, edited by Maria Gabriella Pezone and Angela Michela Convertini, brings together the Proceedings of the Conference held in December 2024, presenting the first results of the PRIN 2022 PNRR NeaVia research project, dedicated to the study of Neapolitan villas in the early modern period (15th–18th centuries).

The project, the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” and the University of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa, aims to redefine the role of the Neapolitan villa within national historiography. This is achieved through an investigation that includes both surviving examples and those known only through sources (literary, archival, and iconographic), using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to reconnect them to the physical locations of the city.

The first results, discussed in the volume after one year of research, outline a rich and articulated framework that highlights the complexity of the research and the value of the architectural and landscape heritage of historic Neapolitan villas.

The book, published by FUP – Firenze University Press, is available at:

European Heritage Days 2025

Events | 01/10/2025

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, last Sunday the members of the Nea_Via research group guided visitors in retracing the history of the villas built along the Mergellina seafront. Starting from the church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta, passing by Palazzo Pescolanciano and the fishing lodge of Ferdinand IV, formerly belonging to Andrea Bonito, duca dell’Isola, and arriving at the church of Santa Maria del Parto, the tour revisited the events concerning the vast estate of the poet Jacopo Sannazaro, from the early sixteenth century up to the profound urban transformation that took place from the late nineteenth century onwards.

Special thanks to Maria Gabriella Pezone, Principal Investigator of the project, Maria Teresa Como, Giuseppe Pignatelli Spinazzola, and Angela Michela Convertini

12th AISU Congress

News | 31/03/2025

Maria Gabriella Pezone (Principal Investigator of the Nea_Via project), Maria Teresa Como, and Giuseppe Pignatelli Spinazzola will coordinate one of the sessions at the 12th AISU Congress – Italian Association of Urban History, titled “The City as a Crossroads. Relationships and Exchanges, Intersections and Encounters in Urban Realities” (Palermo, September 10–13, 2025).

The session, titled “Early Modern Villas as Crossroads of Versatility in the Contemporary City. Changes and Continuities for an Interpretation of Urban Place Qualities”, is open to proposals that aim to reflect on how villas, country houses, and rural estates have influenced urban growth patterns. The session welcomes proposals that, starting from in-depth analyses of individual cases, seek to uncover how these places—originally designed for pleasure and the contemplation of beauty—are still present in the contemporary city, hidden, or completely erased.

The session finds it particularly valuable to trace, through such analyses, the historical roots of still-existing urban qualities within the examined contexts. The ultimate goal is to interpret identities, contents, and values that are essential for a conscious use and governance of the territory in today’s urban environment.

For more information about the congress and participation details, please visit the dedicated page on the AISU website:

For the full session description “Early Modern Villas as Crossroads of Versatility in the Contemporary City. Changes and Continuities for an Interpretation of Urban Place Qualities” and to submit your proposal, refer to Macro-session 5 – Cities and Spaces of Versatility: https://aisuinternational.org/palermo-2025-sessioni-macrosessione-5/

The deadline for proposal submission is May 3, 2025.
